MICROSCOPY AND ANALYSIS OF HISTORIC DECORATION

Jane Davies provides an expert research service to clients requiring the assessment, investigation, analysis, recording and interpretation of significant painted decoration, surface finishes, applied decorations and wall paintings associated with historic buildings.

Paint analysis requires small samples of material to be removed from its architectural setting. Each sample is carefully recorded, numbered and stored. Samples are mounted in polyester resin and polished in cross-section with a range of graded abrasives.  Samples are examined microscopically at high magnification under dark-field reflected and ultraviolet illumination, photographed and drawn when necessary.  Transmitted, polarised microscopy may also be provided.  Once an understanding of the sequence of paint layers has been established microchemical tests are undertaken to identify key pigments on a number of strata.  Appropriate instrumental analysis services, such as scanning electron microscopy and gas chromatography with mass spectrometry, can be supplied as required.

The research process and findings are fully documented in detailed illustrated reports produced for the client. Specialist advice on the significance of the surfaces identified, consultancy for possible conservation treatment and colour matching for redecoration may also be provided as required for individual projects.
